Negros In Nature:
Phase One: Reclaiming Calm
Reclaiming Calm
This project is a heartfelt tribute to my grandfather, Mganga, whose boundless love for the great outdoors has always inspired me; my father, Terrence Sr., whose teachings emphasized the vital importance of nurturing plant life and its inhabitants; and my brother, Terry Jr., who has unwaveringly supported every adventurous idea I've ever chased. Titled "Negros in Nature: Reclaiming Calm," this initiative seeks to transform the outdoors into a sanctuary for healing, joy, and self-affirmation for Black individuals and communities.
By inviting participants to share their unique lived experiences and answer thought-provoking questions regarding this topic, we create a rich tapestry that celebrates moments of tranquility and freedom, while also addressing the barriers that have historically limited access to these natural spaces.
I aspire to ignite meaningful conversations, challenge prevailing narratives, and inspire every Black person to envision themselves as an integral part of the natural world—equally deserving of peace and a sense of belonging. It is crucial to recognize and elevate the diverse experiences and contributions of Black people within these environments. We are not merely visitors; we are deeply intertwined with the land, carrying with us a wealth of histories and traditions intricately linked to the natural world. By reclaiming our place in these narratives, we assert our role as caretakers of the environment and as vital participants in the vibrant communities that flourish around these breathtaking landscapes.
